How the SAT tests this skill
A system of linear equations appears on virtually every SAT Math module. The straightforward version asks for the solution point; the version that separates scorers asks when a system has no solution or infinitely many — which is really a question about parallel and identical lines.
The Desmos calculator built into the test can graph both equations in seconds, so raw solving speed matters less than recognizing which questions Desmos kills instantly and which are faster by hand.
- Solving systems by substitution and elimination
- No-solution and infinitely-many-solutions conditions (matching slopes)
- Word problems that hide a system in two conditions
- Knowing when graphing in Desmos beats algebra
