SAT linear equations practice questions
Linear equations anchor the SAT Algebra domain — roughly a third of the Math section leans on them. Work the free questions below, then check each explanation to see the setup the test reuses over and over.

How the SAT tests this skill
The digital SAT tests linear equations in one and two variables, both as bare equations and wrapped in word problems about rates, fees, and totals. The algebra itself is rarely hard; the points are lost translating a sentence like "a flat fee plus $4 per mile" into y = 4x + b under time pressure.
Expect solve-for-x questions, questions that ask for an expression's value rather than the variable itself (a classic trap — solving fully wastes time), and interpretation questions that ask what the slope or intercept means in context.
- Solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable
- Building linear models from word problems (rates, fees, totals)
- Slope, intercepts, and what they mean in context
- Recognizing when to solve for an expression instead of a variable
